When John and I first made the decision to sponsor kids through Compassion International, we were geeked (no that's not a word), ecstatic, honored.
I was sharing Stenley's picture (from Indonesia) with the kids and telling our story to feel led to sponsor. The kids blew me away--I really didn't think that they would care. BUT- They immediately wanted to help---they even offered for us to fly him here (he's 5 by the way) and keep him for a few days.
I told them it was rather illegal-expensive-and...did I mention- illegal- to just fly him here. After I dampened their idea, they asked then for our class to sponsor a child.
About a month later--we are in the final steps of the process to sponsor. The kids are responsible for researching and nominating a child this week they want to sponsor. Today we went through the information and criteria--they can't wait--and I can't either. They have already learned so much just through going through the selection process of the kids.
(.....i had mentioned to the kids that the ribbon on some of the photos means that the child being sponsored is in an AIDS dominated area. All of the kids immediately said "no" because they don't want to get AIDS. Ya know....in case one of the kids cuts his finger while writing the letter and then when we read the letter it will pass on to them. Or if the kids breathes on the letter or touches the paper with their hands....
hehe...their 6th graders--they have no idea how AIDS is transmitted. They do now---teachable moment.) Precious. Love it!
I cant wait to post with the results...I'm curious to see who they will choose! There is really no telling.
