My Soldier

I drove to work today with so much frustration and anger in my heart. I couldn’t stop thinking about Ft. Hood and the awful events of the past week. I have been reading up on the event of those who lost their lives and the motives behind it. Islamic terrorism seems to be the most logical and real answer---terrorism on our soil. Disheartening. Devastating. Disturbing.

The school that I teach at celebrated Veteran’s Day today—we have tomorrow off. By the end of the day my frustration subsided and triumph and pride out weighed the emotions from earlier in the morning.

We were privileged enough to have very high ranking and honorable men and women teaching our students today. We had a star 1 general (1 of only 301 that lead over 500,000 soldiers in the U.S. Army today), a Holocaust survivor that melted my heart (he was the only one of his family members that survived the concentration camps), and several veterans from all sectors of our armed forces.

I heard so many emotional stories today---but each ended in such an honorable and respectful way. Each individual who shared wanted to leave one lesson with our students……keep passing down these stories. I was shocked when one soldier said to me, “it’s so good you guys are doing this, it’s so devastating seeing the history books re-written and today’s history written incorrectly from what really happened.”

I know one brave soldier that I wish I could have heard today. His entire career was spent serving this country in the Army---along side my uncles. Richard Whitcraft---thank you for your service. I love you Grandpa!
