It starts young

Another interesting conversation today.....

We are currently reading a novel that is set in Medieval times. During this time, the lord of the manor has illegitimate children who are unaware of their claim to the throne once he dies at war.

So the kids and I are talking about WHY everything in the book has happened to this 13 year old boy (being chased, almost killed...things like that). The answer should have led to: he was wanted dead because he was a threat to the throne. He could have been used for power on his mothers side.

One student (a male) raised his hand and commented that the entire thing was the mothers fault.....after all, she is the one who was pregnant with the boy. I literally stopped in my tracks and asked, "what did you just say?"

He was clearly stunned by my reaction, so I repeated the question with a little input. "So, it's the mothers fault that she has a son and it's not the lord's fault for also contributing to the matter?"

I am shocked by how many students believe it is the girls fault for getting pregnant. One of two things is going on here: 1. they dont know that it takes a man and a woman to make a baby 2. women are perceived in society as the guilty ones for causing the pregnancy.

O BOY!
