Small Victories

In one of my classes this year I have the LOWEST student I have ever taught. She is incredibly sweet---but has not had the appropriate education that she deserves. I can see she has been written off and ignored--presumed "unteachable" and flat out hopeless. She lacks family encouragement--mom's busy with a brand new baby....life for her is crazy.

I was overwhelmed at the beginning of the year, thinking it would be an uphill battle that would end in the same spot as where I started. SHE IS PROVING ME WRONG.

I get chills thinking about this girl....she is a level 1---she is in 6th grade and reads at a 2nd-3rd grade level. She can't really comprehend anything we read in class because the vocabulary and sentence structure is higher than what her brain can handle.

I started giving her books just above her reading level in hopes to catch her up and slowly move her up the chart. In most cases, students of such a low level also have an incredibly low motivation level.

Not her---She is on her 2nd book in the last 3 weeks---she loves reading what I give her. She read over the weekend--finished the book--and asked me for another today. I Love It!!! I am so proud of a girl who is fighting the odds to make her way in the world. She will not be defeated.

Lord--thank you for humbling me and placing people in my life that encourage me and inspire me. Thank you for my awesome job and thank you for my irreplaceable students. You specifically placed each one of them in my class--it's not by accident that I'm teaching them.

I am blessed!
